You Need to Maintain Your Eye Health throughout Your Life

As we’ve told you many times here at Laser Surgery Eyes, laser eye surgery is not a preventative measure. Yes – with the life changing procedure, you can return to 20/20, or even better vision – but you still need to protect your eyes after having had it to ensure no new problems occur.

That’s why it’s important to protect your eye health throughout your entire life. However, it’s hard to do so, when there are so many eye health myths out there that just won’t seem to go away.

The Following 10 Eye Health Myths Simply Aren’t True

That is why we’re about to present to you 10 of the most common eye health myths in existence, and explain to you why they’re a load of old rubbish…

  • Your Lifestyle Has No Effect on Your Sight: People still seem to believe that just because your eyes can’t get fat, that your lifestyle- what you eat, how much you exercise etc. doesn’t affect your eye health.

However, your eyes are a part of your body, and are just as subject to the ravages of unhealthy food as any other part of your body.

  • Working on Computers is Bad for Your Eyes: The endemic fear of technology that exists in certain sections of society, has prompted the rise of many technology-related health myths i.e. smartphones cause cancer.

But the worst has to be the idea that working on a computer can damage your eyes. However, it’s not the fact that you’re working on a computer that is damaging your eyes, but the fact that like most people, you don’t blink as much as you should do whilst doing so. Blinking is good for eye health!

  • Carrots Can Improve Your Sight: Of course eating fruit and veg is good for your health – they carry certain vitamins and nutrients that are just as good for your eyes, as they are for the rest of your body.

Yet there is nothing specific about carrots that improves your sight. However they do carry vitamin A, which is good for your eyes, so it’s certainly not a bad thing to eat them – as part of a balanced diet.

  • Squinting Can Damage Your Sight: This is a case of people mixing up what squinting actually means. Because people tend to squint when they need glasses, this can lead you to think that squinting has somehow caused you to need glasses.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Squinting actually makes  the pupil smaller, letting less light in, and helping people with vision problems to see better. That is why if you are squinting, you doing so only because you need glasses.

  • Reading in Low Light Can Damage Your Vision: A myth likes this comes from the idea that if we work an area of our body too hard, we will end up damaging it. However, as we know from exercise, working an area of your body will tire it out, maybe even make it hurt.

The feeling of tiredness will fade, and so will any pain. It’s exactly the same when you read in low light. Because you are reading with less light to work with, your eyes have to work harder to see what’s on the page, meaning you strain them.  This strain however, will go away.

  • Sitting Too Close to the Telly is Bad for Your Eyes: This myth has been perpetuated by new age generation parents who decry the cultural influence of TV on the psyches of their children. And in this way, at least, they’ve done the world a disservice.

There is no proof to suggest that sitting too close to the television damages your eye health. It’s rather like working on a computer; the closer you sit, the less you blink. Again, don’t underestimate the value of blinking.

  • Eye Problems are Genetic: We can see why people believe this one, are there are many conditions i.e. cancer, which actually are genetic. And sometimes, eye problems can be too. Basically, if your parent(s) had an eye condition, it does tend to give you a higher chance of developing it. That does not, however mean that you will actually get it.
  • Age Related Eye Conditions Are Inevitable: The general discourse around conditions such as cataracts, which most often develop due to age, is that if you’re going to get it, you’re going to get it, no matter your diet, lifestyle etc.

This is wrong. If you have a balanced diet, don’t smoke etc. then this can cut off some age related eye health problems before they get the chance to develop.

  • Eye Exercises Will Improve Your Vision: This one is probably just wishful thinking – or cajoling on the part of eye health advocates, as if there wasn’t an immediate benefit to eye exercises, most people simply wouldn’t bother with them.

Generally adult vision is fixed, so there’s little normal exercises can do about. Yet they can help with some focusing difficulties and convergence issues, and they are good for overall eye health, just like the fact that exercise is good for health in general.

  • Since Adult Vision is Fixed, It’s OK to Skip Eye Exams: As we’ve previously explained, whoever you are – especially if you’ve had laser eye surgery, you need to invest in eye exams roughly every two years, to ensure that no problems develop as you age.

Use Your Common Sense
